Corporate Use of Audio VisualSystems

The novelty of smaller mobile interactive devices sometimes makes us forget about more 'traditional' audio visual systems. Not only that, but the ubiquity of audio visual systems means we have become so used to them we hardly notice them. They are part of our environment. That is not to say there haven't been advances. Beyond actual technological advances the mere fact of the systems' affordability means they can be used in a broader range of areas with more and more novel applications. Not that long ago flat panel monitors were only seen in large commercial shopping centers, now most homes have a flat panel LCD as their main television.
The Audio Visual Boardroom
Corporate offices are no strangers to integrated A/V systems. Video conferencing has been happening in boardrooms for decades. But previously, the expense of such systems has meant they only appear in the boardrooms of very profitable international corporations. Even where they did appear they were unreliable, difficult to use and because of limited networking capabilities and incompatibility issues often were not used for anything more than communicating between different parts of the same company.
Now that the technology has become affordable and high speed networks are part of every city's infrastructure, video conferencing systems have become an essential utility for corporations of all sizes rather than an executive toy for huge multinationals. So many companies now do business long-distance and internationally over the internet. Being able to conference with existing clients and meet prospective clients face to face is a great boon. Previously an employee or a whole team would have to fly out in order to meet a client in person. Along with the expense of multiple flights, a several hour long flight doesn't always leave a person in the best frame of mind for an important business meeting.
Outside the Boardroom
Video conferencing is not the only application of audio visual systems in the corporate world although it is perhaps the most familiar. Training rooms feature throughout large offices. When staff need to be up-skilled or taught about new developments in their industry (a more and more common occurrence), companies often find it more cost effective to set up their own training facility. These rooms will often have conferencing facilities so that experts can give remote training and presentations. Such facilities mean that the room can double as a small conference room, where representatives of different departments or smaller groups within the organization can have informal meetings.
Outside the Office.
Businesses don't only use audio visual systems to communicate within the company or between other companies. Audio visual systems are also used to communicate between the business and its customers, especially where those companies' commercial aspects are directed to the general public.
Audio visual systems are used so widely now that we hardly think about them at all. In fact we are most likely to consider them when they are absent. Imagine turning up at the cinema and looking for the monitor that displays the film times only to see that they are posted up on an old fashioned plastic hoarding. We would either think it was very strange or had been done as a gimmick.
